Memory Test For Dementia | Palm Harbor | Brain Fitness Centers of Florida

When the memory starts to slip, it can be concerning as well as bring up fears for the one experiencing the memory loss. Additionally, family and friends are affected. It is natural to want to know if there is a memory test you can take for the purpose of diagnosing dementia.

Testing With Your Primary Care Physician

To begin with, you may choose a visit to your primary care physician. He or she will initially conduct a medical assessment. This will include an in-depth medical history, physical exam, and possibly neurological tests. Neurological tests determine how your senses respond to stimuli, brain function, your balance, and reflexes.

The results of the medical assessment do not contain links to dementia. Other tests may be administered such as:

  • Laboratory tests
  • Brain scans
  • Genetic testing
  • Psychiatric evaluations

Further, your physician may then do more comprehensive cognitive testing which will include those that assess mental functioning such as memory testing, problem-solving, and language.

Memory Testing for Dementia at Home

There are memory tests for dementia that you could take from the comfort of your home. One of these is the SAGE test. This test was developed by Douglas Scharre, MD, of Ohio State University Medical Center. SAGE stands for Self-Administered Gerocognitive Examination. This memory test promises detection of the early signs of dementia.

SAGE is not a diagnostic test, meaning that it will not give you a diagnosis at home. It is a paper and pen test, which takes about 15 minutes to complete. The next step is to see your physician, as he or she will need to score your test. Further testing may be necessary.

According to Dr. Scharres, “Studies confirming the validity of the test have found that the test can identify 80% of people with mild cognition and memory issues. 95% of people who do not have cognition issues will have normal scores.”
